Home Flooding: The First Steps That Limit the Damage

Homeowner guide   Practical, plain-English steps

When water is spreading across your floor, the first few minutes decide how bad it gets. Here's the safe order to act in.

Safety before cleanup

If water is near outlets, appliances, or your panel, cut power to that area at the breaker before entering the water. Standing water plus electricity is a serious hazard.

Find and stop the source

If it's a plumbing source, shut your main water valve. If it's coming from outside, focus on moving belongings up and out of the water's path.

Remove water quickly

A wet/dry shop vac, mop, and towels help, but for large volumes you'll want a pump or a restoration crew. The faster water is gone, the lower the chance of warping and mold.

Dry, document, and restore

Photograph everything, run fans and a dehumidifier, and consider professional water damage restoration if carpets, subfloor, or drywall got soaked — mold can start within 24–48 hours.
